From last few years women are stepping out to pursue their career, follow their passion, achieve their dreams. Women now be seen in almost all fields of life, e.g. bankers, company executives, politician, sales, marketing, etc. today women are not less than man and they support their families equally as men do. These women are like double edged sword. They work outside the house, and can’t get rid of the responsibilities of household chores too. Men on the other hand, aren’t supposed to help with chores. In short, if women can afford to get a house help they’re lucky, otherwise theirs is a difficult life.
The real issue is beside accepting the women as coworker/ colleagues there are many barriers they have to face to prove themselves as equal:
- Wages and increments:
It is generally observed that women hired in low wage as compare to men. In corporate environment, both gender work equally, both have to pay their bills, but when it comes to promotion, wage, or increment man will be the first preference. In many organization women are rewarded as man, they hired on the low salary scale.
- Gender Bias
In Pakistan gender discrimination is very common, every other working woman is facing the same issue. Due to this women are not able to drive the benefit from spreading labor market and technological advancement. Govt or private both sector has the mind set that women are less capable than men, due to which they suffer the most.
- Sexual Harassment :
This is the major issue faced by Pakistani working women, this the most shameful issue faced in our society. They considered as an easy target by colleagues. In office colleagues and higher management harass them by passing inappropriate remarks or making fun of them or in extreme cases they harass them sexually. Usually women opt to remain silent or ignore them because they know that it is of no use to make a complaint against them. Higher management doesn’t support them.
- Negative attitudes of male co-workers:
Attitude of male co-workers is sometimes really humiliating and biased. It is considered that women are hired just to add colour to the office environment. Lack of workplace social support, from colleagues and supervisors, it is socially assumed that women has no career focused.they will sooner later leave the job and they don’t have serious attitude towards their career.
- In-office politics
I was the victim of the worst and quite frankly most pathetic office politics in my previous job, I can say this is hands-down the worst factor ever, specially when you’re the sort of a person who just keeps ‘apney kaam sey kaam.’ !
You don’t care who’s getting paid what more or what less, you don’t care who has a problem with who as long as everyone is fine with you and the list goes on and on. The working environment needs to be healthy.
Women face challenges successfully, women need to be self-confident and should keep herself up to date with the latest happenings in the world of technology. Pakistani enivorniment is changing and improving day by day. Women have to become strong and stand for her own. Hoping sooner the problem will solve for all working women in Pakistan. Another most important thing is to maintain balance in work and personal life.
Also there is a need to educate men and tell them to respect other women like they respect women in their family. They should show flexibility in their attitude and should accept that women can perform even better than them.
